Talent

One of the many highlights of our annual event is enjoying the talent of local artists, dancers, musicians and poets. This 2024 group offers a rich (and fun!) variety that captures the spirit of our community.

Drae Slapz

“Energetic” - “Rare” - Hard Hitting”

These are the phrases typically used to describe the soundscape of Drae Slapz.

Born in Portland Oregon, Slapz is typically holding it down as the live DJ for some of Portland's most exciting hip-hop acts--including Mic Capes, Brookfield Duece and Rare Vibe.

Slapz does this while maintaining his monthly event "The Kickback," DJing corporate events and performing his own music live. His latest announcement finds the popular DJ getting from behind the boards once again and back into the booth with his full length project "NRG."

AMBER FLAME, Poet

Amber Flame is an interdisciplinary artist, writer, activist, and educator. Flame’s work has been published in diverse arenas, including: Def Jam Poetry, Nailed Magazine, Winter Tangerine, The Dialogist, Split This Rock, Black Heart Magazine, Sundress Publications, CityArts Magazine, FreezeRay, Redivider Journal, and more.

A 2016 and 2017, Pushcart Prize nominee, and Jack Straw Writer Program alum, Amber Flame's first full-length poetry collection, Ordinary Cruelty, was published in 2017.

In early 2018, Flame co-curated the art installation Black Imagination at Core Gallery in Seattle. She had her first solo exhibit in 2019 with a project entitled ::intrigue:: 8, a multimedia installation that featured musical compositions inspired by the text of 8 different poets with original video content as well as text from the original poems. Flame’s second book of poetry, titled Apocrifa, launched May 2023 from Red Hen Press.

She’s currently making a film from her newest collection, supported by Black Cinema Collective. In addition to creating change as Program Director of Hedgebrook, she continues to work as a writing instructor in community and for currently and formerly incarcerated women and youth while working on a third poetry collection, making music with her band Last of the RedHot Mamas, making art, and raising her awesome kid.

Bloco Alegria

Bloco Alegria is Portland’s own percussion and dance ensemble modeled after the traditional samba schools in Brazil. We are a fun-loving community of diverse drummers and dancers who love performing the musical styles from Rio de Janeiro to Bahia Brazil, and more. Our goal is to bring the beauty and joy of Brazilian carnival to Portland.

The origin of samba lies in African drumming music. Samba developed as urban music in the 1950’s within the favelas of Rio de Janeiro. Portland saw the beginning of samba in the 1990’s with The Lions of Batucada. The seed was planted. Bloco Alegria was founded in 2011 to continue spreading the joyfulness of samba music to our community. Bloco Alegria includes singers, string players, percussionists, and dancers.

We have sponsored some of the top samba leaders from Rio de Janeiro and Bahia here in Portland to provide group and individual workshops. We welcome all those interested in Brazilian music, percussion and dance to come join us. We teach weekly classes for anyone interested in joining us. We are always looking for new opportunities to get people hooked on samba!
